Castaway in the Maldives?
What would you do if you found a mysterious message in a bottle on the pristine beach? Perhaps you’d think it’s an SOS from a castaway in the Maldives. That’s what I thought anyway.
It was a sunny and already hot morning and we were ready for a new adventure. We were finally heading to a deserted island that could be seen from our resort across the blue waters.
Luckily, the resort was offering kayaks for half a day for a 35-40 min of serious rowing. Actually, it is for as long as you want to stay during the day, don’t worry about your time running out.
We’ve been loving the kayak fun for around ten years now, after a glorious debut in Turkey, back in 2009.
Did you know that you are forbidden to swim from one island to another?
Crossing the emerald lagoons and then deeper dark waters in between the reefs is an experience I totally advice you to go for. The rowing is not too difficult and, if the weather is not friendly, the hotel staff won’t let you leave anyway. Besides, life jackets and waterproof bags for your belongings are provided for free. Though, the kayak rental is for a fee (last year was $50 for half a day at Reethi Beach Resort).
What we found on the other island?
Normally, you’d be tempted to say all Maldivian islands look the same, but not after visiting them. Each tiny cookie has it’s own reef and lagoon of various sizes, shades of blue, vegetation or marine life presence. These details make the destination uniquely charming, thus the increasing number of addicted returning tourists.
Once we reached the deserted island – Robinson Island they call it, go figure! – that we’ve been dreaming of for quite some time, we made sure the kayak and the rest of our equipment were in a safe place, away from the water, and started to explore the small uninhabited territory.
What can I say, if I am to be a castaway in the Maldives, this is the place to be!
Did you know it is forbidden to try to visit a private resort/island without prior notice and approval.
After only a few steps, I saw a tiny object shining in the bright sun light and half buried in the fine white sand. As I lean over to get a closer look, to my surprise, I saw this small sealed bottle containing a folded written piece of paper.
Was it a mysterious message in a bottle from an alleged castaway in the Maldives or just a love letter?
