Traveling during winter holidays time? Then you better check out these 22 best winter destinations. And hurry before it’s all booked!
The hottest winter destinations in Europe, Asia, North America, South and Central America and Africa are waiting to welcome you. Why not start packing now? Follow me and let’s travel the world!
Whether it’s way ahead planned or last minute, Christmas and New Year are great opportunities to travel, so I’ve come with a list of 22 best winter destinations.
Since the period is just as crowded as summer time, you better make up your mind quickly and start choosing, planning and booking – the three golden rules of traveling!
Which countries are warm in winter?
The answer to this question is all countries along the Equator line and the southern hemisphere. This is because we consider winter the season celebrating the New Year, aka from December to February.
From warm tropical islands to the coolest and trendiest destinations today, winter season is made for traveling. And the best part here is that winter is usually the off season, coming with the lowest prices and the least crowded spots.
While many like to spend Christmas at home, others enjoy the joyful spirit of the winter holidays around the globe. After all, it’s so much fun to discover other traditions and customs, don’t you think?
Where is the best place to go for snow?
Apart from Lapland, Northern Europe or Russia, some of the best places to see some serious snow would be in USA and Canada. You may add on your list:
- Colorado Springs, a very dear destination;
- the Yellowstone National Park;
- Lake Tahoe (don’t get fooled by the Califronia/Nevada usually hot states)
- Iceland, around the glaciers and the breathtaking ice caves.
- Niagara Falls, the Canadian side I’d say.
Let’s see what are the best winter destinations in 2019 2020
My suggestions come in total random order and this is the only way they should be. We are very different and we like/dislike different things. The same with the holiday destinations. The numbers would be just to ease your reading.
First time travelers are not completely clueless, they always know what they want. The experienced travelers already have their custom-made expectations. Therefore, I’ll leave the numbers aside and just suggest stunning destinations for any travel addict on any budget.
Now, Christmas is a complete different vibe to New Years Eve, hence you might want to plan these thoroughly. Just remember – skipping Christmas it’s absolutely fine every now and then! I’m talking about the traditional feast back home, of course.
So which are the hot winter destinations in 2019-2020?
Best winter destinations in Europe
By far Europe seems to be one of the best choices when it comes to winter holidays. It’s all about the diversity – more countries on a relatively decent stretch of land, more choices. With winters from quite extreme to mild, Europe comes with a wide range of options for all travelers and budgets.
My first two choice might come like a cliche, but before you judge, just give them a chance – they never disappointed!
That being said, here’s my top choices when it comes to spending Christmas and New year in Europe:
1. Rovaniemi, lapland – best to visit for Christmas
But what is Lapland?
“It is Finland’s northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. It’s known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts and natural phenomena including the midnight sun and the Northern Lights. Capital Rovaniemi is the gateway to the region. The homeland of the indigenous Sami people, which extends into neighboring countries, centers on the far north.” Thank you, wiki!
Is Lapland real?
Absolutely, as real as your boots are. Speaking of which, please be advised that winters in general, December in particular, are freezing cold there.
How cold is in Lapland in December?
Temperatures range between -6°C and -3°C, dropping as low as -9°C at night. In most cases, real feel is worse. Discouraged? Hopefully not!
Does Santa live in Lapland? Where can I see Santa in Lapland?
It is Santa’s home and, if you are a believer, this is the place to be. Rovaniemi is the Official Hometown of Santa Claus in Lapland. It is the place you can meet Santa Claus and cross the magical Arctic Circle every day at Santa Claus Village.
To ease your mission, check the travel agencies for best package and deal. And, why not, try to plan this ahead. Those laughing now will be green with envy later, once you show them the photos. But, of course, this isn’t the main reason to travel, is it?
2. Transylvania and Bucovina, Romania – also visit on Christmas time.
My Romanian roots cannot recommend these places enough. Usually, the winters are pure magic, with a lot of snow making the traditions look even more beautiful.
Is it safe to travel to Transylvania?
Pfff, really hard to tell as the place’s still crowded with vampires and werewolves and other nasty creatures of the dark… wait! I’m kidding!
3. Prague, CZECH Republic – suitable for both Christmas and New Year Eve.
It’s no news that Prague is a top destination and travel addicts are flowing more and more toward this gorgeous city. If it used to be a favorite spot for Christmas break, it is now time to finally recognize Prague as a very modern destrination you want to party all night long on New Year’s Eve. Don’t pass by!
4. London, UK – for New Years Eve party.
What can I say here – it’s the place I will be welcoming 2020. It’s the most convenient destination since I moved to the UK and Christmas is already booked elsewhere (can’t talk about that yet, but stay tuned or check my IG).
London has been love at first sight back in 2012. That is why I visited twice that year. Once in June, enjoying a Coldplay concert on Emirates stadium, aka Arsenal’s playground and also the Queen’s Jubilee festivities. Returned in November, this time for the Killers on O2 arena.
Have you read my article about things to do at Kimmeridge Bay?
I know I’ve been seeing the New Year’s fireworks every year but… only on tv. Therefore, this is the year to upgrade.
London is truly beautiful, the shops and the cozy hotels are perfect for your winter escape away from home.
If Christmas and New Year in Bristol is what you want, take a look here.
5. Paris – for Christmas or New Year.
Ah, Paris, mon amour!
Paris is an essential piece of any serious traveler’s puzzle. It’s about love, culture, history, fashion, luxury, glamour, shopping, gastronomy and wines and also amazing nightlife, all wrapped into one big beautiful city. Ahem, city of lights.
Visit the French capital around Christmas or party hard on New Years Eve – these are the ultimate activities for any travel addict!
I’d book a table at the Eiffel Tower restaurant and also check the Galeries Lafayette for true Parisian glamour shopping vibe. Come on, what’s Christmas without just a tad of shopping? A TAD!
But, if you want something truly Parisian, mingle with the locals in Montmartre Pigalle district and don’t be afraid to enter any of the local restaurants there. Like this one, for example, Le Sanglier Bleu – a spot that is in my heart forever now. It used to be a little more romantic a few years ago, though.
6. Venice, Italy – not surprising at all, visit for New Year Party.
There cannot be a list of the best winter destinations without Venice. Probably most of you rather visit this stunning little island-city during summer months, but believe me, Venice in winter is breathtaking!
Let the magic take over!
7. Vienna, Austria – Visit on Christmas.
Mozart, Mozart music, Mozart candies, Mozart vibe… Vienna is the place to be around Christmas. The Christmas market is so beautiful and all the decorations around the city will make you fall in love with this destination!
The cute little center is the heart of all the fun and Christmas here feels truly magical. Don’t miss the street food sausages and the line at Cafe Sacher is worth the experience once you get inside.
8. Berlin
Christmas in Berlin is a very dear memory to me, but people rather go there for New Year parties.
I know I loved the Christmas vibe a lot, due to really nice Christmas markets at every corner – felt like Heaven. Also, the bars and restaurants are cozy and welcoming.
Don’t stay at the hotel, wander around and discover the holiday spirit of the German capital!
But, speaking about hotels in Berlin, you might want to check Albrechtshof. The breakfast buffet they serve there, at least in December, around Christmas, it’s out of this world! Literally out of this world.
9. Moscow, Russia – anytime in winter!
Moscow is impressive during winter holidays. A true capital of christian orthodox religion, the churches and the customs play an important role here. But it’s all part of the Christmas magic, isn’t it?
I would recommend you to spend both Christmas and New Year here, if you choose this stunning destination. Then, you can enjoy some really tasty Russian meals and plenty of vodka! Or water, of course.
Best winter destinations in Asia
I know, the first thought in your mind is wait! there’s no Christmas in Asia!
But, does it really matter?
What is Christmas to you? Is it about the carols and the traditional dinner? Is it about the church service? Maybe the beautifully decorated stores? Is it all about Santa and his gifts?
Despite of a less celebrated Christmas in most Asian countries, many stores and hotels like to display Christmas trees and decorations, winning the tourists hearts.
And, if you a re a foodie like me, Asia is the place you want to travel during the cold season!
That being said, let’s focus more on New Years Eve locations, shall we?
10. The Maldives – anytime really
The Maldives is that sort of destination that would welcome you at any time of the year. And, if I was completely honest, I would spend an year on those beautiful islands.
Why spending Christmas and New Year in the Maldives? Because that would make an unique travel experience. For more details about this country and how to visit, you better check out this article with a complete list of tips about the Maldives.
It’s probably useless to describe the beauty of the little islands and true paradise vibe everywhere around you. You could take a look at one of my videos while being in the Vietnam on New Year.
And, if you want to get the maximum of your journey, make sure you book a scenic seaplane transfer from Airport to the resort. Here’s a glimpse of what seaplane transfer means in the Maldives.
11. Hong Kong, China
If you don’t do yourself this favor and see the Hong Kong New Year spectacular and out of this world fireworks at least once in a lifetime… then perhaps you could try Thailand!
12. Thailand
Whether is the so lively Bangkok, or the beautiful sunny Phuket or even the stunning Krabi, Thailand is a dreamy destination for a great New Year party.
And, if you care to try something completely out of the ordinary, I dare you to travel up north, say Chiang Mai.
13. Vietnam
Vietnam is also an amazing destination to spend the New Year among fun people and vivid tourists just like you.
And, yes, I’m repeating myself now, if you are a little foodie like I am, then Vietnam must be one of your top destinations. OK, if you love spicy hot food.
As a personal preference, I would go up north to Hanoi instead of Ho Chi Min. Remember Vietnam is a big country and between south and north might take serious time.
Based in Hanoi, you can easily enjoy a more picturesque area, including the breathtaking Ha Long Bay.
14. Bali
I could write a novel about why you should visit Bali. This is that type of place that will never change dramatically.
Perhaps you think of the brochures with dreamy beaches, crystal clear blue water and a cocktail in your hand. Yes, that could make your New Year Eve perfect. But I was thinking more like Ubud.
I admit, I don’t say you should be in Ubud for New Year, but visiting the village and the entire area around is truly a must while in Bali.
Best winter destinations in North America
15. New York, USA
Needless to mention it perfectly suits Christmas and New Year.
The sparkling little lights, the impressive buildings, the inviting stores full of nice stuff, the people rushing to grab the perfect gifts on the last minute, all these made me want it too!
It’s been always my dream to visit NYC for the first time in December, around Christmas. Maybe it’s a Home Alone 2 – Lost in New York syndrome, maybe it’s the Terminal? or maybe the good old classic Miracle on 34th Street.
And, if we really want, dreams do come true!
16. San Francisco, USA
A New Years Eve party in San Francisco is the ultimate travel fashion!
Make sure you keep up with the trend and book this destination now.
17. Toronto, Canada
Impressive skyscrapers and Christmas market at Nathan Philips Square, the fun with DJ Skate Nights at Harbourfront, the very cosmopolitan bars and restaurants make Toronto a must.
The destination has gained a lot lately and more and more tourists are checking it. Not yet suffocating crowded, but hurry up!
Toronto is a stunning city around winter holidays and, if you go for this one, you probably want to visit Montreal too.
18. Miami, USA
Why would you go to Miami in winter, you’d ask. I can think of a very good reason: the highest ocean temperature I’ve ever swam in. Literally feels hot against your skin.
When I first visited Miami, I could not believe this water temperature and I promised to myself that I will be visiting during winter season, just to enjoy it even more!
And, if you stay in Miami Beach, the fun is guaranteed! Actually, yes, this is the place to stay if you visit Miami for New Year’s Eve parties.
Best winter destinations in South and Central America
First of all, please allow me to include Central America here as well, so here we go:
19. Havana and Varadero, Cuba – for New Year Party.
Don’t expect to spend a memorable Christmas in the salsa country, but it’s the perfect way to step in 2020.
Check my article and learn what to do in Cayo Largo, Cuba
20. Rio de Janeiro, Brasil – also for New Year Party.
You do know that Rio de Janeiro is the most scenic city in the whole wide world, don’t you? Now imagine the fireworks like a crown on top of this stunning destination. Or the salsa dance flooding the streets like a sample of the Carnival waiting around the corner.
The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro takes place in February every year and if you aim to see the parade, you need to plan accordingly.
21. Caribbean Islands – Cruise ’em all!
Jump on a cruise and have the time of your life this winter! Oh, I know, cruises are not your thing. But, you could reconsider if you live in, say, Europe?
The heavy winter is knocking on your door and you just saw this photo here with this ship sailing to the Caribbean islands to spend a memorable and luxurious Christmas and New Year.
Believe me, an exotic cruise will take you to one of the 22 best winter destinations, considering the Caribbean islands as one, and you will enjoy every minute of it.
Just take a look at this photo below – it could be you!
Best winter destinations in Africa?
Gotcha! I have no idea either.
I’m sure Africa has plenty of beautiful places to spend your winter holidays and bring more than just a touch of exotic into their spirits. Besides, if it’s winter up North, it must be nice and warm in the South, right?
One of the best hot winter destinations you could go for is:
22. Cape Town, South Africa
This one is on my bucket list and I’ve been so close to make it that it cannot be delayed for too long anymore. I recommend it because I want to spend a New Year there. For sure it will be an amazing experience as I strongly believe Cape Town is one of the 22 best winter destinations!
Anyone can recommend me something about Africa? I know there’s plenty.
Bottom line, these are the 22 best winter destinations of the moment and, if you are a true travel addict, you want to check some of them this winter.
And now, before closing this article, I want to raise another problem that is important and can influence your decision when planning winter holidays:
Does winter weather have an impact on your decision to travel?
I’m the type to take the risk, I admit. I’ve been booking trips when people would avoid because of extreme weather (been to Miami in September or visiting Barcelona in December) and I was lucky.
This is the truth, it’s only a matter of luck and you know weather cannot be predicted months in advance when trips are usually planned already.
My theory is quite simple: yes, there’s a chance to get bad weather, a chance to end up with cancelled flights or whatever, but then, there’s a chance to see a new destination, when it’s less crowded.
And my other theory: any bad weather while traveling the world is better than just staying home for good weather.
Are these hot winter destinations on your bucket list?
